Hudson River Yacht Racing AssociationHRYRA was founded in 1953, by a group of dedicated racing sailors with the aim of promoting inter-club yacht racing in order to expand the competition of sailboat racing on the Hudson River. Since its founding, HRYRA has become a member association of US Sailing and as such is the nationally sanctioned governing body for all sailboat racing on the Hudson River. Though one of the smallest nationally recognized sailing associations, HRYRA boasts some " world class " sailors as members. Hudson River sailors have also racked up top finishes in such prestigious regional races as "The Around Long Island Race" and "The Governor’s Cup", as well as North American and World Championship series. HRYRA also sponsors a Junior Sailing Program complete with a series of regattas for young sailors. The demanding currents and shifting winds of the Hudson River require a level of skill and knowledge that continue to produce generations of skilled racers. Junior HRYRA members have placed in the top finishers at New York’s "Empire State Games" on a consistent basis. Currently there are many young men and women competing in Collegiate sailing who first skippered a boat in a race on the Hudson River. HRYRA also supports an active women’s sailing program sponsoring a regional team to compete in "The Adam’s Cup" which is the US Sailing national championship regatta series as well as providing a series of races specifically for women sailors. The administrative support that HRYRA brings to the Hudson River allows the numerous yacht clubs to compete amongst themselves, and to compete at the regional and national levels in an organized, efficient and sportsmanlike manner.
